Fish , Amphibians and Reptiles Amphibians as Laboratory Animals
نویسنده
چکیده
Amphibians include over 4,500 species within 3 major lineages---caecilians, salamanders, and anurans (Stebbins and Cohen 1995). These lineages are linked by several unique physiological traits. The most prominent is the indirect lifestyle of many amphibians--the aquatic gillbreathing larval stage and the aquatic or terrestrial lung or skin-breathing adult stage. A second feature of amphibians is the presence of 2 types of skin glands: mucous and granular. Mucous glands keep the skin surface moist to allow transcutaneous respiration, but they also put the animals at risk of desiccation. The granular glands secrete toxins and function primarily for defense (Zug 1993).

Special Issue: Viruses Infecting Fish, Amphibians, and Reptiles
Although viruses infecting and affecting humans are the focus of considerable research effort, viruses that target other animal species, including cold-blooded vertebrates, are receiving increased attention. In part this reflects the interests of comparative virologists, but increasingly it is based on the impact that many viruses have on ecologically and commercially important animals. Frogs a...
متن کاملZoonotic Role of the Grasscutter
Zoonoses have affected human health throughout times, and wildlife has always played a role. Wildlife has long been recognized as potential sources for infectious diseases in humans and domestic animals. Diseases of wildlife have historically gained attention primarily when they were considered a threat to agricultural systems and the economic, social, or physical health of humans (Andrew et al...
متن کاملForeword: Pathogens and immune responses of fish and reptiles
Editorial Fish and reptiles host a fascinating array of pathogens and diseases. Our knowledge of the host-pathogen interactions in these animals is driven by their importance in human food systems, zoological collections, medical products, research models, and healthy natural ecosystems. Although generally less extensively studied than mammalian and avian systems, the “lower vertebrates”, which...

PURPOSE: The humane care of animals used in research is a recognized scientific and ethical responsibility endorsed by Texas Tech University (TTU) and encouraged or mandated by a variety of agency guidelines and regulations, including the Animal Welfare Act. “As with other vertebrate groups, the use of amphibians and reptiles in research and teaching raises ethical questions that must be carefu...
متن کاملIsolation and Characterization of Protease Inhibitors from Animal Tissues
The intent of this article is to review protease inhibitors produced from a diversity of animals including cnidarians, annelids, insects, crustaceans, mollusks, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. They can be isolated from various tissues including pancreas, ova, liver, seminal plasma, serum, venom, skin secretion, hemolymph and salivary glands. Animal protease inhibitors display a variety ...
